Endless Dismal Moan is the brainchild of Japanese musician Chaos 9(R.I.P). Embracing the digital production and aesthetics of his era as well as incorporating the suffocating sensation of Japanese horror. Endless Dismal Moan provides a completely twisted take on the very idea of raw black metal that remains unsurpassed to this very day. We have been given permission by a live band member and close associate of Chaos 9 (R.I.P) to reissue this second demo as well as the Chaos II demo that is constained within the second part of this compilation.
Lord of Nightmare is not only aesthetically accomplished but also innovative and significant within the history of underground music. With Lord of Nightmare, sole member Chaos9 abandons the melancholic romanticism of early black metal in order to create a masterpiece of contemporary urban horror. The music on this album immerses the listener in a chaotic vortex of visceral despair, evoking the nightmarish visions often found in the Japanese cyberpunk movement. Lord of Nightmare stands as Chaos9’s greatest accomplishment, a culmination of his artistic vision and a terrifying statement within a genre that was slowly repeating itself. Excellent summary of what makes Endless Dismal Moan special – I couldn’t agree more. While EDM’s music is undeniably hellish, I feel that it captures a more Asian conception of what hell is like. Hell in Abrahamic traditions is often characterized chiefly as a place (or state) in which the damned experience extreme pain for eternity. There is a sadistic quality in the emphasis on pain and punishment. On the other hand, damnation/hell/purgatory in Asian traditions is primarily defined not by the experience of pain (though it certainly comes with the territory), but by the absence of peace. Endless Dismal Moan is an engaging embodiment of what it’s like inside a mind bereft of peace – a mind utterly steeped in CHAOS.
